## Thesis

In an AI-saturated economy, every product feature, every code commit, every market analysis is increasingly commoditised. The only sustainable competitive edge is the human skills layer, the judgement, taste, coaching, and contextual decision-making that no model replicates at scale.

Skills are not optional in this environment. They are the differentiator.

## The evidence base

- **World Economic Forum, *Future of Jobs 2025*** , 39% of the core skills required for the average job are expected to change by 2030.
- **McKinsey Global Institute** , generative AI could add $2.6-4.4 trillion in annual value, captured disproportionately by organisations that can redeploy human skills against new opportunities.
- **OECD Skills Outlook 2024** , the half-life of technical skills has fallen from ~10 years (1990) to ~4 years (2024); the skills people had at hire are obsolete inside one promotion cycle.
- **Upleashed dataset (106.5M+ assessments)** , the median team operates at 62% of its own stated target capability. The gap is not a failing; it is the largest visible opportunity.

## Three implications

1. **Capability data is the bottleneck.** Most organisations have rich financial data, decent operational data, and almost no current data about what their people can actually do. Decisions get made on memory.
2. **The mapping-first stance wins.** Teams that map skills before restructuring move the right people 70% more often than teams that restructure first.
3. **Single points of failure are now AI-amplified.** Where one person knows a critical AI tool, prompt, or process, the failure cost is higher than ever, automation reduces backup paths.
