The short version
Free templates are usually a single tab, a person × skill grid with conditional formatting. Useful for sketching the idea. Almost useless for actually running a team. Our £199 template gives you the methodology, the dashboards, the automated roadmaps, the editable narrative descriptors on a fixed 0-5 scale, and the £1 PulseAI upgrade. The price reflects 20 years of refinement and the fact that it actually works in production, not 20 minutes of someone formatting a grid in Excel.
Three ways to think about £199
1. £199 vs your hourly rate
If you make £50/hour fully loaded, you have already considered £199 = 4 hours. The free template will cost you 20+ hours of building dashboards, descriptors, formulas, and roadmaps yourself. The 4 hours / 20 hours math wins on its own.
2. £199 vs one bad training course
A single off-the-shelf training course for a 10-person team typically runs £800–£3,000. If the matrix prevents one such course (because you realise the team didn't actually need it), you've paid for the template four to fifteen times over. Most teams discover this in the first quarter.
3. £199 vs one wrong restructure call
Fully-loaded cost of one wrong knowledge-work redundancy is £40k–£120k (CIPD benchmark). Detail at before-you-restructure. £199 against that is a rounding error.
The honest cases where you should NOT buy ours
- You just want to see what a matrix looks like. Use our free mini matrix instead. It uses the same methodology, no payment, no email.
- You already own an enterprise HCM (Cornerstone, Workday, SuccessFactors) with a skills module you haven't yet rolled out. Roll that out first, you've paid for it.
- You're an individual planning a promotion or career move, not a manager. Use Insynode instead, it's free.
- You have a regulator coming next month demanding a documented external assessment. Engage a specialist consultant, the documentation requirements are different from what the template provides.
What 20 years of refinement actually means
The reason the template is worth £199, when a free download isn't, comes down to the parts that aren't visually obvious in a screenshot:
- The descriptor wording for each of the six 0-5 levels, refined across thousands of teams to maximise inter-rater reliability and minimise gaming.
- The fixed proficiency weighting (0 excludes a skill from the individual; 1=25%, 2=50%, 3=75%, 4=100%, 5=100%) that lets Excel, PulseAI, and the free 5×5 builder agree on every number a manager sees.
- The Level-4 freshness rule that makes the matrix defensible to regulators in safety-critical industries.
- The automated roadmap logic that picks the right 2-3 development priorities per person, not just the lowest ratings.
- The Speedo dashboard, the single chart senior leaders actually look at, calibrated so that the colour transitions land at meaningful thresholds.
None of this is in a free download. Most of it is invisible until you've tried building your own and discovered, three weeks in, that you missed it.
Try the method before you buy
If you want to try the approach first, the free 5x5 builder walks you through the exact method on a tiny team, in your browser, with no email needed. You will see the heat map and the gap analysis in under five minutes. If it feels right at that scale, the full template will feel right at 30.
Three lines
- Free templates are fine for sketching the idea. They cost you in rebuild time, not in cash.
- £199 buys you the 20-year-refined methodology, the dashboards, the roadmaps, and the £1 PulseAI upgrade, payback usually inside a month.
- Don't buy ours if you're an individual, if you already own an enterprise HCM, or if you need formal third-party audit documentation.
